Ghost town hunt
During the summer of 2009, while during some research I came across the mention of a town in an adjoining county. I had never heard of this town and after extensive research, phone calls and driving the area I thought I had it narrowed down enough to ask permission.
After a phone call I had permission for an area that I thought at least might have been part of the old town. I had to wait a few months before the beans were down but I was excited to get in the field and see if my hunch was right. Cold weather was setting in and I knew I didn’t have many days to hunt it. The first 2 hunts were very unsuccessful but it was a big field at over 1,000 yards long and over 300 yards wide.
The third hunt was different, I came across an area where I started finding red bricks and started getting some iron hits and it wasn’t long before the flat buttons started appearing, one right after another and then I got a solid 12/46 on my E-Trac and was hoping for a silver quarter but to surprise I dug up a large cent but not just any Large cent, this one was dated 1807 and my oldest coin to date. I finished the day out with several large buttons and the large cent.
My third time out I took off for the other end of the field swinging fast to try and find another hot spot. The field was quiet and wasn’t getting many hits until I started coming across brick again and wasn’t long until I found a nice little button then another. I was walking in straight lines, following the lines in the field and working my way out until the signals would disappear. During my third pass I was headed out of the signals, they were getting few and far between when I got a good signal and before I knew it I was holding my oldest coin to date, a 1795 Spanish ½ Reale!
There is still more research and a lot of hunting to be done and I hope I have more exciting finds to share with you from this site in 2010!
